| One of
France's most beautiful regions.
Comprising the departments of the Herault,
Aude, Gard and Pyrenees-Orientales,
Languedoc is one of France's most beautiful
regions - and home of southern France's best
cuisine.
The Languedoc has an
enormous amount to offer - gorgeous and varied landscapes,
a Mediterranean climate
that offers over 300 days of sun a year,
a huge range of sightseeing attractions and sporting opportunities,
and, of course, lots of charming French restaurants serving
the area's increasingly excellent wines.
The terrain here is surprisingly
diverse, with long, wide sandy beaches (unlike Provence),
vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, and dramatic
rocky escarpments rising above the region's herby garrigue
- all dotted with traditional southern French villages.
Languedoc is particularly
blessed with things to do - from the enormous 'La Cite' medieval
fortress at Carcassonne to the green and
tranquil Canal du Midi - both now designated
as official UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Then there's the
Cathar castles perched high on cliffs, the roman Pont du Gard,
and scores of beautiful Romanesque and Medieval churches and
abbeys.
For those of you who love the countryside,
the dramatic landscapes and warm climate of Languedoc
make it perfect for long walks, mountain biking, or canoeing
down one of the region's many dramatic river gorges. In short,
an area of outstanding beauty and endless possibilities -
just waiting for you to explore it.
